Craniosacral Therapy: A Gentle Approach to Restoring Balance and Reducing Stress

In today’s fast-paced world, many people struggle with chronic stress, headaches, muscle tension, poor sleep, and persistent pain. While traditional treatments are often effective, many patients are looking for complementary therapies that help their bodies heal naturally. One such approach is Craniosacral Therapy (CST)—a gentle, hands-on treatment focused on supporting the nervous system and promoting whole-body wellness.

At River Forest Health & Wellness, we’re excited to offer Craniosacral Therapy as part of our comprehensive approach to helping our patients move better, feel better, and live healthier lives.

What Is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral Therapy is a light-touch manual therapy that focuses on the tissues and fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord, collectively known as the craniosacral system. Using gentle pressure—often no more than the weight of a nickel—a trained therapist evaluates and releases restrictions throughout the body that may be contributing to pain, tension, or nervous system dysfunction.

Unlike traditional massage or chiropractic adjustments, CST uses subtle techniques designed to encourage the body’s own natural healing mechanisms.

How Does Craniosacral Therapy Work?

The central nervous system controls nearly every function in the body. When the body experiences physical injury, emotional stress, inflammation, or repetitive strain, tissues surrounding the nervous system can become restricted.

These restrictions may contribute to:

  • Chronic muscle tension

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Jaw pain (TMJ dysfunction)

  • Neck and back pain

  • Stress and anxiety

  • Poor sleep

  • Fatigue

  • General feelings of imbalance

Craniosacral Therapy aims to gently release these restrictions, allowing the nervous system to function more efficiently and helping the body return to a more balanced state.

What Conditions May Benefit?

Many patients choose Craniosacral Therapy for support with:

Headaches and Migraines

Reducing tension throughout the head, neck, and surrounding tissues may help decrease the frequency or intensity of certain headaches.

TMJ Dysfunction

Gentle work around the jaw, neck, and cranial structures may help relieve muscle tension and improve comfort for individuals with jaw pain or clenching.

Chronic Neck and Back Pain

Persistent pain often has multiple contributing factors. Craniosacral Therapy can complement chiropractic care and physical therapy by addressing soft tissue and nervous system tension.

Stress and Anxiety

One of the most common benefits patients report is a profound sense of relaxation. Many people leave treatment feeling calmer, lighter, and more centered.

Sleep Difficulties

By promoting relaxation and calming the nervous system, Craniosacral Therapy may help improve sleep quality for some individuals.

What Does a Session Feel Like?

Many patients are surprised by how gentle Craniosacral Therapy is.

During your session:

  • You’ll remain fully clothed.

  • You’ll lie comfortably on a treatment table.

  • Your provider uses light hand contact on various areas of the body.

  • Most sessions last approximately 45–60 minutes.

Some patients experience deep relaxation during treatment, while others notice gradual improvements over several visits.

Is Craniosacral Therapy Safe?

For most individuals, Craniosacral Therapy is considered a gentle, low-force treatment. However, it may not be appropriate for certain medical conditions involving increased intracranial pressure, acute bleeding, or unstable neurological conditions. Your provider will perform an evaluation to determine whether CST is appropriate for your specific situation.

A Complement to Comprehensive Care

At River Forest Health & Wellness, we believe the best outcomes often come from combining therapies based on each patient’s unique needs.

Depending on your condition, Craniosacral Therapy may be paired with:

  • Chiropractic care

  • Physical therapy

  • Massage therapy

  • Myofascial release

  • Acupuncture

  • Corrective exercise

This individualized approach allows us to address both structural and nervous system components of pain and dysfunction.
